Immigration

Immigration has contributed to the strength and success of America. It has added to the fabric of the nation culturally and economically.  Independent studies show that enacting comprehensive immigration reform will be a boost to the economy, creating job and raising wages. Everyday that goes by without reforming our immigration system our country loses out on the economic benefits that go along with it.

Image of an immigration office.Susan is pushing for Congress to enact changes to America’s immigration system. She has cosponsored comprehensive legislation on immigration reform and urged the House to act on the bipartisan bill that passed the Senate in the 113th Congress.

Immigration reform will bring undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and require them to earn the privilege of staying in our country.  This humane approach to reform will keep families together and ensure greater contributions by immigrants currently in the country.

Dreamers

Susan opposes deporting young adults who have known only America as their home. These talented young people were brought to America through no fault of their own. They have grown to love this country. Many have already contributed to America economically and through military service and more. If these young people meet the stringent requirements for remaining in the country, they should have that opportunity.

Susan supports the President’s recent actions on Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA).  Both the DACA and DAPA actions are just one component to immigration reform. She believes that Congress needs to get off the sidelines, work together, and take an active role in bring about reform.

Refugee Crisis

America has a long history of being a safe haven for those escaping violence and oppression. San Diego is home to many refugees from around the world, including the Middle East. Susan believes, that as a world leader, America has a responsibility to people fleeing turmoil. For these individuals, leaving their homes and family members is a heart-wrenching experience and a difficult decision. The current process, which takes as long as three years, rigorously vets these individuals through multiple federal agencies covering intelligence, security, and law enforcement.

The House is back in session after a long election season, and we have a lot of work to do before the end of the 113th Congress.  First, we must pass an appropriations bill to fund the government beyond the current December 11 deadline.  I would prefer to see a full year appropriations bill that takes a government shutdown off the table and gives businesses, federal employees, and citizens who depend on federal programs the confidence that government services will not be interrupted.
